More than half the seafood eaten worldwide comes from aquaculture. That’s why aquaculture is the fastest growing area of food production. It has kept up a steady expansion of 8.4% a year since 1970. Aquaculture accounts for more than 35% of all direct and indirect aquatic production and consumption (e.g., indirect including "reduction" fisheries products such as fishmeal) in the world. Aquaculture currently accounts for more than 50% of all direct consumption by people, and will provide more than 50% of all direct and indirect aquatic production by 2025.
